Can I use my inventory numbers on the Identifier?
Yes. You can change the serial number to match your existing asset or inventory numbers. Alternatively, many collection management systems allow for an alternate ID, which allows you to associate the existing serial number with the number you already have assigned to the work.
Is my information private on ID4ARTS?My Client’s information?
Yes. The owner’s identity and confidential market information is never captured and never disclosed.
We want to immerse works of art in information. We want owners of a work and those who need to know the work’s whereabouts, condition and safety (for example, insurers, financial lenders, consigners, art storage companies) – to have accurate, reliable and up to date knowledge.
But no private information is captured on the chip.
How Does id4arts work with blockchain?
Blockchain creates a digital registry that can be distributed globally. The technology is so powerful that it creates trust in the integrity of the data. But how do we know that the data entered today refers to the same object tomorrow when it is sold? What guarantees do we have that a registered work is not replaced with a forgery? For any object to be safely and transparently registered to the blockchain, it must have a physical link, a means of assuring that the object is permanently identified with the chain of data on the registry. ID4ARTS provides that physical link.
Why give a work of art a serial number?
First, because it makes it possible to keep track of works simply, efficiently, and reliably.
The global art market today suffers from fraud, forgery, insider deals, money laundering, and contract disputes. Most collectors want transparency, confidence in what they are buying, price disclosure, and to know a work is authentic. Serial numbers are a step in making the market more trustworthy.
i am a dealer. what if my client doesn’t want an identifier?
The chip has a “kill switch,” which allows you to turn off the chip’s communication function permanently and irrevocably. Also, the Identifier can be safely removed by an authorized party without any marks or residue on the work.
What about moving art internationally? Will the identity be readable in Europe or Asia?
We can track the movement of a work of art across continents. The Identifier complies with global standards set by the International Organization for Standardization, a Geneva-based nonprofit. Every RFID product produced by reputable firms follows those standards.
why do you say that the Identifier is “designed to fail”?
If someone tries to remove the Identifier from a work, it self destructs. That is a signal to the monitoring system that someone is trying to take the piece, or to put the Identifier on another work. The Identifier is strong enough to reliably report its identity for many decades, but fragile enough to fail if bad people try to take it off.
